Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,

Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep sea swell

And the profit and loss.

                        A current under sea               315

Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell

He passed the stages of his age and youth

Entering the whirlpool.

                        Gentile or Jew

O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,            320

Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.

죽은 지 보름지난 ‘페니키아’ 상인 ‘플레바스’는
갈매기 울음도, 깊은 바다 물결도
남고 밑지는 것까지도 잊어버렸다.

바다 속 물결은
속삭이며 그의 뼈 발라냈다. 그가 물맴이로 들어와
그 속을 오르내릴 때마다
그는 청춘과 노년의 고비 고비를 다시 겪었다.

그대가 기독교도이든 유대인이든
오 그대가 바람과 맞서는 키잡이라면
'플레바스'도 한때 그대처럼 멋지고 웅대했다는 것을 잊지 말라.
